Why is there a warning label on my 6 Seed Crackers?

The warning label on your 6 Seed Crackers is due to California’s Proposition 65, a law that requires businesses to provide warnings about potential exposure to certain substances, including naturally occurring elements like lead.

At Top Seedz, we use all-natural ingredients, and trace amounts of lead can be found in the soil where seeds and grains are grown. Since we prioritize transparency and compliance with regulations, the label is there to inform customers—not because lead has been added to our products, but because it may be naturally present at trace levels.

We regularly test our products to ensure they meet safety standards, and we remain committed to providing healthy, high-quality snacks.

What is Prop 65?

Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to warn Californians about exposure to chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects, or reproductive harm. These chemicals can be found in products, workplaces, homes, or the environment. The law also prohibits businesses from discharging significant amounts of these chemicals into drinking water sources. California maintains a list of affected chemicals, updated yearly, which now includes about 900 substances. Approved by voters in 1986 (63% in favor), Proposition 65 helps Californians make informed health choices.

How does Top Seedz ensure the quality of its products and ingredients?

As per the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Top Seedz uses their Approved Suppliers Program as a preventative control for Heavy Metals, Pesticide, or Mycotoxins. Some heavy metals such as Lead are considered naturally occurring in ingredients that are known bioaccumulates. We require Heavy Metals, Pesticide, and/or Mycotoxins testing from a laboratory with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for every incoming ingredient lot that is a known bioaccumulate.

All suppliers that we use must also comply with current US Food Safety laws and the FSMS Preventive controls rule. They must also have GFSI recognized accreditation, USDA organic certification, Kosher certification, and provide a Prop 65 statement of compliance.

What is bioaccumulation?

Bioaccumulation occurs when an organism absorbs a substance faster than it can eliminate it, leading to a buildup in its tissues. In seeds, this process can result in the gradual accumulation of chemicals like pesticides or heavy metals like lead.

As part of the plant lifecycle, seeds absorb chemicals from their environment—such as soil and water—through their roots and other plant structures.
