From Seedlings to Heart-Healthy Habits: Growing into Our Parents' Wisdom

Kia Ora!

In the heart of Heart Health Month, I find myself reflecting on the roots of my love for seeds and nutrition. Growing up in New Zealand, my parents instilled in me a deep appreciation for eating well and steering clear of junk food. While some families indulged in the tradition of fish and chips every Friday night, our household didn't, which always left me a tad envious.

Instead of greasy takeaways, we had something far more precious: our own vegetable garden. Back then, I failed to appreciate this. Yet, as fate would have it, I've grown into a fervent advocate for the joys of gardening in my adult years. Funny how life comes full circle, isn't it?

Now, as a parent myself, I find history repeating itself. My children, much like their younger version of me, occasionally lament the absence of fast food indulgences. It seems the cycle of yearning for what we didn't have continues. I drive the family crazy spending a good five minutes listing what came from the garden each meal and how much nutrition I've packed in!

Here's to sowing seeds of health and happiness. Cheers to the journey of embracing our roots and nourishing our hearts, both literally and figuratively.
